Why come
The hill stands six kilometers from the Adriatic, with the Sibillini, Gran Sasso and Majella visible on clear days: a position that put the fortress at the center of the town's identity long before any tourist arrived. The Rocca was first built by the Acquaviva family in the fourteenth century and rebuilt in 1474 by Baccio Pontelli, the Florentine architect who also worked on the Palazzo Ducale in Camerino and the Sistine Chapel walls. Inside its walls, two museums sit side by side: one holding the family's medieval and renaissance weapons, the other preserving the wheat-straw baskets that women of the town wove by hand, passing the technique mother to daughter across generations.
Outside the fortress, the walled center keeps its stone gates and stepped streets, recognized with a Bandiera Arancione by the Italian Touring Club. Once a year the Palio del Duca turns those same streets into a contest ground, with neighborhood teams competing in archery and crossbow. The fortress explains why the town exists on this hill; the basket and the palio explain what its people have done with the centuries since.
