Villetta Barrea

The Sangro river runs through Villetta Barrea and feeds the lake, the reservoir that closes off the southern end of the park. The village itself sits on the southern slopes above it, with the medieval castle and its huddled houses forming the upper, older core and the streets below spreading out from that nucleus as the town grew. That growth was not driven by the castle alone: after 1447, sheep and herder economies took hold, and transhumance became the spine of inland Abruzzo for four centuries, shaping the village as much as its stone walls did.

Wolves, chamois, and Marsican brown bears live in the surrounding park, unseen by most visitors, but it is the deer that define the place now, coming down into the streets in the evenings as if the boundary between forest and settlement had never quite closed. Pescara is 75 kilometers north. What holds Villetta Barrea together is that layering: a herding economy that built the town, a park that now protects the animals that economy once managed, and a species that walks the streets as though the old arrangement between people and wilderness were still in effect.
