Why come

Tirano sits in the upper Valtellina, twenty-five kilometers east of Sondrio and a few kilometers south of the border at Campocologno. The Orobie chain rises behind it to the south, the Bernina massif to the north, and the Adda runs through the center, dividing the lower town from the upper town, which are linked by stone bridges. On 29 September 1504 a local named Mario Omodei reported a Marian apparition; the plague that was killing the town stopped, and on 25 March 1505 the foundation stone was laid for the church built on the site.

The railway behind the town, opened by the Rhaetian Railway and inscribed by UNESCO together with the Albula line, reaches the resort on the far side of the pass. The town carries Cittaslow status and produces bresaola IGP alongside its wine on the surrounding terraces. Tirano's position, at the meeting point of a valley floor town, a mountain railway, and a pilgrimage site, makes it a junction as much as a destination: the place where the mountains behind it hand off to the Valtellina.
