Cirò

Cirò sits in the eastern foothills of the Sila, six kilometers from the Ionian Sea. The Bronze Age presence here is documented by fossil finds, and the Greeks knew the town as Psykròn, a name that predates the medieval settlement built above it. The hilltop borgo occupies the ground between the castle and the mother church, its stone streets preserving the layout of the Carafa fief, while the vineyard slopes fall away below toward the sea, the same ground that produced Krimisa wine for Greek settlers and produces Gaglioppo now.

The town shares its appellation with Cirò Marina, Melissa, and Crucoli, so the DOC belongs to a stretch of coast and hillside rather than to Cirò alone. What the village adds to that shared ground is the fortified summit and the historic core built around it. Cirò is the inland anchor of a wine zone that reaches the coast, its castle and church marking the point where the settlement began before the vines spread downhill toward the Ionian.
